What is resolution?

As the wiper of the potentiometer travels along the resistance element , the voltage is varied accordingly. On a wirewound potentiometer, the wiper travels over the top of each turn of wire; it cannot make contact with it's entire diameter, causing a stair step voltage reading between each turn of wire. This change is normally expressed as a percentage of full travel and is called resolution. Generally speaking, a larger pot will have better resolution. For example , 1 10K 20-turn potentiometer will exhibit approximately twice the resolution as the same model 10K in 10 turns.

Single conductive plastic is a smooth material. It has essentially infinite resolution . That is, there are no stair step electrical readings as the wiper travels along the element.
